INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT FOR NIDO STUDENT. Completed
A Designer at Heart is in charge of the design of communal areas, bedrooms and communal kitchens for a student accommodation in Copenhagen, Denmark.
In terms of sustainability, it’s worth noting that the building achieved the DGNB Silver certification: we specified bamboo floor in all bedrooms, and linoleum (which is over 90% natural) for all corridors and communal kitchens. We used Smile Plastics (sustainable composite material made of recycled yoghurt pots) for study tables in the main lounge. We used durable materials like composite worktops in communal kitchens, fire-resistant and anti-stain upholstery, high-quality furniture which is durable (to avoid long-term waste). LED lighting on a PIR sensor was used throughout (even the decorative signs are “neon-effect” LED). We specified a feature water fountain in the reception area to refill bottles and discourage single-use plastics and distributed real plants in the amenity spaces.
Nido Bryggen was developed in response to the demand for a higher quality ‘living experience’ for students in Europe. It’s a 16,500 sqm PBSA with 443 rooms and 600 sqm area for communal spaces. In line with Nido’s brand values we designed with modern-living and wellbeing in mind. The result is inspired by the local context and operationally future-proofed. The building has outdoor space with a courtyard, fully fitted communal terraces and a herb garden. There are also fitness facilities and a wellness room. Following Biophilic Principles, we created feature walls made of preserved plants which are easy to maintain, have a high visual impact and a real smell of nature. The studios are equipped with mini kitchens to guarantee independence. Additionally, every resident has access to communal kitchens on each floor and a bookable Private Dining Room (PDR) in the amenity spaces for parties with friends or cooking workshops organised by the operator. There are also 5 thematic communal lounges (entrance lounge, TV lounge, servery lounge, quiet lounge, games lounge) as well as a cinema room, laundry and gaming nook.
